• fact. George Laurie (1897-1989), known as Laurie, son of James Woodrow and Mar ia Fleetwood Luya, born at Gympie on 5 October 1897. Foundation pupil at G ympie High School in 1912. Joined tbe staff of the Queensland National Bank in 1914. Enlist ed in tbe AIF in the Great War, on 26 August 1915, in 5th Light Horse a nd served in Egypt. Transferred to 13 Brigade, and went to France in 13 Ma chine Gun Coy, whicb became part of 4 MG Battalion in the 4th Divisio n. He served until the Armistice in France and Belgium, rerurning home in 1919, discharged on 13 July. Resumed work with the QN Bank, at Wondai, where he married Mabel Stuckey on 21 November 1923. Became manager of the National Australia Bank at Annerley. Retired to the War Veterans Home at Moggill, where Jennifer Stubbs visited him not long before his death on 4 September 1989, aged 92. He had kind recollections of her mother, whom he used to meet at the Luya home at Annerley. Three children, Marie, Gerald, Ronald. * Aust. War Memorial Record.
