David Douglas Woodrow

• fact. David Douglas (1895-1972), Colonel. Known as Douglas, son of James and Maria Woodrow, born at Gympie on 7 March 1895. Joined the militia in the Central Queensland Light Horse, and when the Great War broke out in 1914, enlisted in the AIF on 2 I August* and served in the 2nd Light Horse Regiment on Gallipoli. F mm 19 I 6 served in the ISI Light Horse in Palestine until 1918, transferring to the Australian Flying Corps in May 1918, being commissioned as Second Lieutenant in No. 1 Squadron. Returned home after the war, in April 1919, to Gympie, and in 1920, he and James Edward (Ted) established the firm of Woodrow Bros, in Mary Street, Gympie, trading as ironmongers, plumbers and crockery merchants, and agents for farming implements. They dissolved the partnership after the Second World War. Continued his military career in the militia, and helped secure the headquarters of the 5th Light Horse Regiment for Gympie. Became a colonel, and in 1940, soon after the outbreak of the 2nd World War, was appointed to command the 1 st Cavalry Brigade. Married Gladys Lilian Bracewe ll on 28 February 1922. Died on 1 i July 1972. Five children, Margaret, la l1, June, Jill, Kenneth.
