Noted events in his life were:

• source. & Anne Speight who notes:
Harriet Hare was a village girl from the River otter valley, east of Exeter in Devon. In 1851 Harriet and her sister were in Bath, England as lace makers - not sure of any detail of this, who they sold onto etc... Edward Coombes was born in Wliltshire, England was schooled in France and as a young man went to Australia gold prospecting etc. He was a trained surveyor, mining engineer. In mid 1850's Australian governemnt sent him to the 1855 Paris exhibition. In 1856 he crops up in Harpford (River Otter valley) and marries Harriet Hare.
How on earth would they have met? A seemingly huge difference in social class. Can this really be true?
Possibly (would love to find proof) Harriet might have been an expert lace maker - and with others (possibly including her sister) went to the Paris exhibition - in 1855 there were 2 or more 'schools' exhibiting Honiton Lace. Then maybe we have a 'love story'. Edward returns with Harriet to England, they marry in her home church and then emigrate to Australia ?

Edward married Harriet Hare, daughter of William Hare and Mary Carter, in 1856 in Honiton or Harpford, Devon England. (Harriet Hare was born on 21 Jun 1829 in Honiton or Harpford, Devon England and died in 1883 in Australia.)
