• Convict. 298 Maree Mcallion (nee Williams) notes:
In 1824 there was a trial apparently William and a friend stole from a workhouse - four legs, six chops, and pork, loaves and other articles. Originally charged with death then changed to transportation to New South Wales, for the term of his natural life.Departed on the ship\\b "Mangles"\\b0 (see ship) Portsmouth, July 13 1824 arrived Sydney Cove 27 October 1824.
William was assigned to John Oxley Esq. At Kirkham, county of Cook. Oxley, surveyor and explorer was impressed by him and petitioned Governor Brisbane to have his family sent out to join him. This was only given to well behaved convicts. Hannah and children travelled as free passengers and arrived 27 December 1828 on the ship\\b "Borneo".\\b0
William was issued with several tickets of exemption from government service which meant he was the servant of his wife.
William and his family were recommended by a former landlord to Hannibal Hawkins Macarthur, nephew of John Macarthur. A conditional pardon 1st May 1843 was granted and William could live a free man in Australia but William could never leave the country.
