The Hamilton Spectator "regrets to learn that Mr. (Charles) John Carter, the well-known squatter, of Rosebrook, died on Saturday, October 9, at the advanced age of 78, and was buried in Horsham on the following Sunday. The deceased was 39 years in the colony; he was 31 years in the Wimmera district, and he was the first settler on the Glenelg River."
