Although the birth certificate of Ellen Churmage (later Hickman) show the father to be unknown, Sarah married Richard less than a year after Ellen was born and Ellen lived with them as his daughter and took his name. Presume therefore that Ellen was his daughter.

Richard married Sarah Churmage, daughter of Samuel Chelmage and Phebey Wasdell. (Sarah Churmage was born circa 1825 in Gornal, near Dudley, West Midlands England and died in 1892 in Dudley, West Midlands England.)
