George built the "Criterian" Hotel in Taradale in 1853 with his brother-in-law, Stephen Dorman. The hotel was destroyed by fire in 1883 and a new Criterion Hotel was built.
Orbituary from the Mt Alexander Mail dated 4/12/1867 We are sorry to record that Mr. Dawes, one of our earliest residents died yesterday, at the hotel at Barker's Creek. For a long time past he had been in delicate health, but his end came suddenly as we hear from the bursting of a blood vessel. At one time in conjunction with Mr. Dorman, he owned the Criterion Hotel and was in affluent circumstances, but through the insolvency of a large commercial house in Melbourne, with whom he was involved, he was at one blow stripped of the accumulation of years. He so far recovered from the effects of the disaster in business, which displaced him from his old establishment as to become the purchaser of the Railway Hotel, in which he has since resided. Many friends will regret the loss of one who was throughout his life deserving of respect.
