Mary Ann is believed to be the first child to George and his 1st wife Eliza. Mary Ann, like both her Father and Grandfather was born in Peasmarsh in Sussex, England. After the death of her mother in 1836 Mary, just 9 yrs old at the time would have played a significant role in the responsibility of caring for her younger siblings of whom Catherine, the youngest, was only 16 months old. After her Father George remarried, Mary Ann, along with her siblings, her Father George, Stepmother Louisa and Louisa's two children, emigrated on the "Orient" arriving in Australia in 1838. It appears that Mary was unable to read or write. Mary Ann married James Faultey in Sydney on 23rd March 1847. James was a timber merchant by way of occupation and it is believed that James and Mary Ann spent much of their married life in Melbourne. Records held by various descendants of the Dawes family show that all of the children of George and Eliza Dawes were living in Melbourne at the time of the murder of their Uncle William in 1852. James Faulty and Mary Ann had four known children, William born 1876 in Lane Cove, Sydney, James, born 1847 in Sydney, Mary Ann Eliza, born 1849 in Melbourne and George Robert in 1851 also in Melbourne. It would appear that Mary Ann Dawes may have remarried at some stage in her life . It would appear that Mary Ann and her husband James remained in Melbourne. Death registrations for both Mary Ann and her husband James were recorded in Melbourne in 1883 and 1889 respectively. References: 1) Ros Taylor. Orientia Dawes Descendant.
