George Whiley was Australian Ploughing Champion in the 1890s and early 1900s when the Ploughing Championships were held in Millthorpe (ref. Blayney Shire Pioneer Register (1993) 413).
On Sunday the death occurred in a private hospital in Orange of Mr. George Whiley, aged 73 years, a native of Spring Hill, who had re- sided in the Millthorpe district all his life. The late Mr. Whiley was one of the greatest ploughmen ever seen in Australia, and on one occasion won the Australasian championship, which was competed for at Millthorpe by ploughmen from
all over the State. He was a pioneer of the ploughing matches at Millthorpe, which in later years developed into the Millthorpe Show. During his ploughing career he annexed mainy of the chief prizes at contests at Millthorpe, Manildra, Orange, Wagga, Albury, and elsewhere. His greatest triumph was when he carried off the championship of Australia in his own centre. He could take a hand and plough the area to perfection, the furrows being as even and as straight as a gun barrel. The death occurred in an Orange private hospital, of Mr. George Whiley, a well-known Forest Reefs farmer, at the age of 73 years. Mr. Whiley, who was born at Spring Hill, where his parents were amongst the earliest settlers, had resided in the Millthorpe district all his life, and his many fine qualities won for him the esteem of the whole community.
