Fraser was born in a log house near Arran Lake, Ont. His father had been born in the same house. Fraser moved to Pipestone, Man after his youngest brother was born in Ontario (in 1904), when about 6). The farm was close to cousins May and Ethel MacLachlan. His mother, Martha Kelly, died when he was 14 or 15, c.1916. He worked the farm with his father.
He moved to Meanook Alberta in 1928 from Regina Sask. He spoke often of working on early road construction, using Clydesdale horses and drag scoop shovels. In Meanook, AB, he helped build the community Church with Jared Brown using paint donated by Eaton's store. He also built and ran the store near the railway in Meanook.
In 1936, Fraser married Vida Olive Pugsley, a widow with 6 children (Pearl, Evelyn, Gordon, Iris, Raymond and Melvin) from Colinton, AB. Two years later, in 1938, the family moved north to Faust, Alberta. Fraser's two girls were born in High Prairie; Patricia and Beryl. He is listed as a carpenter on our birth papers. During the hard years of the late 1930's, he would cut wood or haul fish from the Slave lakes to feed his family. About 1941 the family left the homestead for unpaid taxes, and migrated toward Vancouver, BC.
Fraser became a steam engineer in a sawmill in Port Moody, BC. He became a 3'rd Class steam engineer in 1943 while working at Essondale for the provincial government. He was promoted and worked until retirement as chief steam engineer at Terrace B.C. Skeenaview Hospital. Vida died in 1963, of heart problems, and is buried in Terrace, BC., the old cemetery.
Fraser married Rosina Morrill, a widow and long time friend, in Port Coquitlam, BC. 5 Sept 1964.Rose lost her 2nd husband who was killed on the RR tracks in Port Moody, as he was heading for work at the local sawmill. He was taking a shift for his friend, Fraser McLachlan. Rose remained a widow for years and then married Fraser. They were married for over 20 years and resided in Port Coquitlam BC., until his death at 85.
Rose thought it fitting that Fraser should be interred in the shade of a tree.
