Norman Sparre was no saint himself, having being divorced for 'misconduct' in Surrey Hills by his war bride wife Muriel Russell Cunningham - whatever the behavior was is not known at present. Norman was a clerk, born near Townsville and became a Field Ambulance clerk in WWI, probably because he had flat feet. Nevertheless he shipped out for France in mid 1916 and spent a considerable amount of the next two years in the field. His flat feet obviously didn't respond well to army boots because he was in and out of hospital during his time in France. He was later trained as a 'medical detail' (stretcher bearer?). He was AWOL a few times in France - probably missed the last bus back to base, and he was arrested for drunk and disorderly on his final leave in England.
He only had two leaves in England, in Nov 1918 for a couple of weeks and a month's leave in a three-month stint in Weymouth. He married during the second leave(St Pancreas London 7/4/1919), but it sounds like a whirlwind war romance. He and Muriel arrived back in Australia on the Mahana in mid 1919. After his two divorces, Norman married the considerably younger Beatrice Irene Stevenson in 1938 and lived out his days in Queensland dying on 19/11/1976 at Bridgeman Downs.
