Notes for James William ELLIS: JAMES WILLIAM ELLIS Added by angeladraesmith on 31 Oct 2007 My father, Frederick James, remembered his grandfather, James William Ellis (born lambourn Berks1849) Dad told me that his grandfather worked at the gas works in Croydon until he died - dropping dead at the gates, apparently. I think he also said his grandfather kept carrier pigeons. This connected with the story Mavis ( descended from James William's brother John Ellis born 1853). Her uncle had told her that when James William went to Croydon from Lambourn, he kept in touch with his brother John (born 1853 ) who had settled in Chappletown, Sheffield, Yorks, by carrier pigeon and that the Yorkshire Ellises met up with the London ones at gypsy meets held at horse fairs. Later I found that there were also Ellises in London itself, William Ellis born 1817 West Ilsley is in Paddington in 1841 - his brother Thomas born1815 West Ilsley is the father of James William 1849 and John 1850. mavis tells of a story told by her uncle. Apparently one of their Ellises was in hospital in London having been injured in WW1and he was visited by someone who introduced himself as Uncle Bill - we're not sure who this uncle Bill was - but perhaps was a descendant of William 1817 who moved to Paddington. James married Eliza Eggelton Pontin in Dec 1869 in Hungerford, Berkshire England. (Eliza Eggelton Pontin was born circa 1847 in Soley, Wiltshire England.)
