Mentioned in reference to Court in Creswick & Clunes Advertiser issue 3 May 1861 From Creswick & Clunes Advertiser: Kinsman, Simon:
Marriage 11 Mar 1864 Kinsman to Coad - On Tuesday, 8th March, by the Rev E King, Mr Simon Kinsman to Elizabeth, only daughter of the late Mr John Coad, late of St. Day, Cornwall, England.
Jim Truscott notes:
Elizabeth Coad first married at 16 years old to Simon Kinsman on 23 March 1864 at Clunes in Victoria. Simon was born in 1832 in Cornwall. He was a lot older than Elizabeth and almost old enough to be her father. He arrived in Melbourne in December 1854 on the Delgany, the year of the rebellion at Eureka Stockade and he died in a rock fall mining accident on 8 September 1869 in Clunes, Victoria. His grave (Clunes Methodist, Row B1, Plot 5) is a single plot, with a fence, only half the gravestone remaining, the top half is missing. Note that he was a cousin of John Charles Truscott and so presumably the common grandfather was Melchesidek Kinsman born about 1770. They had a daughter Elizabeth Jane (Bessie) born on 1 July 1865 at Hard Hill in Victoria and a second child also called Simon Kinsman who died at birth just before his father was killed in a rock fall. Simon Kinsman was Jane May Kinsman's nephew. There was clearly a strong connection between the Truscott and Kinsman families as John Truscott, the father of John Charles Truscott, was married to Jane May Kinsman who was apparently the daughter of Melchesidec Kinsman, a miner who died in 1813.

John Charles Truscott married Elizabeth Kinsman (nee Coad) on 8 April 1870 at Creswick, Clunes, near Ballarat in Australia some seven months after Simon Kinsman's death. He returned with Elizabeth Truscott and her daughter Bessie to Cornwall in April 1870 on the ship Swiftsure.2
In the 1871 census for the parish of St Agnes Cornwall, John Charles Truscott was recorded as an innkeeper and farmer of 8 acres and 28 years old. Elizabeth was recorded as 22 years old. Elizabeth Jane (Bessie) who was recorded as a scholar at five years old and a son John Henry (Jim) who was two months old.

(the on-line transcription for the 1871 census reads: "9,Blackwater,1,John C Truscott,Head,M,28,,Farmer 8ac And Innkeeper, Truro Cornwall,, ,,,Elizabeth Truscott,Wife,M,,22,,St. Day Cornwall,, ,,,Bessie Truscott,Dau,,,5,Scholar,Australia Overseas Brit. When John Charles Truscott was 35 years old and Elizabeth Truscott was 30 years old, they left London on 8 November 1877 as free passengers on the Stirlingshire and arrived at Moreton Bay on 4 February 1878. Their daughter Bessie was 12 years old, John Henry Truscott was six years old, Charles Thomas four years old, Sidney Truscott was two years old and Orton Ernest Truscott was an infant.

The Stirlingshire was 1178 tons. The Captain was I. Thynne and the Surgeon was McLean. 389 passengers were landed consisting of 136 English, 56 Scotch, 176 Irish and 21 from other countries.

Ola May's daughter, Nessa Truscott Lee, wrote that John Charles Truscott and Elizabeth Truscott conducted a boarding house in Truro before coming back to Australia and that John came out to work on the railways and later settled in Emmaville. It would be interesting to find out why John Charles Truscott had first come to Clunes in Australia (perhaps the gold rush) and got married to Elizabeth Truscott; then why he returned with his wife and step daughter Bessie to Cornwall, only to come out again to Australia seven years later.

Another of Ola May's daughters, Beth Truscott Ramsay (see scanned hand written notes on file) had found in the 1851 UK census that John Charles Truscott was 9 years old and shown as living in Truro Cornwall where his father was a 'Retail Brewer and Retailer of Beer' in Pydar Street. Perhaps when John Charles and Elizabeth returned to the UK they may have inherited the Pydar Street business and sold it giving them the finances to return to Australia.

The Stirlingshire departed London on 8 November 1877 and sailed via Greenock in Scotland and the ship arrived at Moreton Bay on 4 February 1878.

Orton died when he was 6½ month's old on 15 April 1878 at the Immigration Depot in Toowoomba Immigration only two months after arriving in Australia. Refer to the immigration record or passenger list for the Stirlingshire' in 1878 where he is recorded as an infant. At some stage they established a general store in Texas Queensland, then moved to Deepwater NSW then onto Emmaville, NSW but we do not know the dates of these moves. John Charles Truscott is shown on the marriage certificate of his daughter Ola May Truscott as an importer/exporter. In the 1894-5 NSW electoral roll for Glen Innes (Emmaville) John Charles Truscott and his son John Henry Truscott were listed as store keepers.
The Truscott shop was in Moore Street, Emmaville, nearby the current War Memorial. Truscott Brothers, General Store & Bakery was registered as business in 31 January 1903 with John Henry, Charles Thomas and Sidney Austin as the persons carrying out the business.

John Charles Truscott was appointed a Justice of the Peace in Emmaville on 15 April 1911, only one week before he died.

Noted events in his life were:

• Emigration, Dec 1854, Melbourne, Victoria Australia. Arrived on "Delgany" in Melbourne as an unassisted passenger

• Occupation: miner.

Simon married Catherine Tressider on 22 Feb 1852 in St Day, Cornwall England. (Catherine Tressider was born in 1834, died in Nov 1852 in St Day, Cornwall England and was buried on 10 Nov 1852 in St Day, Cornwall England.). The cause of her death was childbirth.

  Marriage Notes:

Simon next married Elizabeth Coad, daughter of John Coad and Jane Rogers, on 11 Mar 1864 in Creswick, Victoria Australia.371 (Elizabeth Coad was born on 25 Aug 1848 in St Day, Gwennap, Cornwall England, christened on 25 Dec 1851 in St Day, Cornwall England, died on 15 Oct 1935 in Emmaville, NSW Australia and was buried on 16 Oct 1935 in Emmaville Cemetery, Emmaville, NSW Australia.).
