• note. 275 Jourdan Burke notes:
After the first two small English settlements in America, Jamestown and Plymouth, there were four large waves of English settlers. The first were the English Puritans from East Anglia, England to Massachusetts, 1629-1641. The second wave was from the South of England to Virginia, 1642-1675 mainly Cavaliers and their indentured servants escaping Cromwell's government. The third was from the North Midlands to the Delaware, 1675-1725, which were the "Friends" (Quakers). The fourth was from the borderlands to the backcountry, 1717-1775. John Burk, was in the second wave.
The Burk€This second wave was led by Sir William Berkeley who came to Virginia in 1641 and brought many of his upper-class friends. He carried the King's commission as Royal Governor of Virginia and shaped the government, commerce, social life, and religion for thirty five years. The following is the Burk(e) line that goes down to Edmund Jefferson Burke who married Gertrude Storey, who somehow you are related to.
I found John Burk(e) in the book by Darrett B. Rutman and Anita H. Rutman, "A Place in Time, Middlesex County, Virginia 1650-1750" (W.W. Norton & Company, New York - London, 1984). These two professors of history at the University of New Hampshire spent fifteen years organizing data from the records of Middlesex County, Virginia. From the book, the date was 1668 and the scene was inside the home of Thomas Tuggle with his wife Mary and "Mary's eleven-year-old son by a previous marriage, John Burke" along with three of Thomas and Mary's own children.

According to the book by Greever, Hockett, Verbal, and Stevenson "Some Descendants of John Burk (1656-1699) Middlesex County, VA" (Iberian Publishing Company, Atlanta, GA, 1999), the John Burke in the Rutmans' book was the son of John Burk who was born in England before 1633 and came to Lancaster County, Virginia circa 1650. The part of Lancasrer County that he settled in later became Middlesex County. This was the immigrant that started my research on his descendants. .

The book "Albion's Seed" (Oxford University Press, 1989) by David Hackett Fischer gives us a good look at this environment in section two of the book, and will give you a good feel of your English ancestors and their folkways. According to this book, the immigration from England to Virginia in the period from 1642 until 1675 was from "The South of England". They followed the first Royal Governor of Virginia, Sir William Berkeley. Virginia, at that time, stretched from New England to Florida.

John Burk and his father were farmers, but the immigrant started out as an indentured servant. This was common in VA in this time period. England would give emigrants to America 50 acres of land in America to encourage the migration. If the immigrant could not afford the cost of the voyage, he would give his land (headright) and several years of servitude to someone who paid for the trip.

The former Cavaliers, people with aristocratic connections, gentry families, and well to do lesser ranks, formed a unique class structure in Virginia. This structure welcomed the indentured servants to help the development of the VA economy which was agricultural (mainly tobacco at the time). The book "A Place in Time", mentioned earlier showed that in 1668 there were 83 households in Middlesex County, VA with a total population of 912 people of which 334 were white servants and 65 were black servants.
When Thomas Tuggle died, he left his land to his children by Mary and not to John Burk. Despite this setback, John accumulated 190 acres of his own land. He had had several wives and one of them was Ann Hutchins, born c1675 and died in 1743 in Caroline Co., VA.

John and Ann had one known child, Henry Burk, born c1698 in Middlesex County, VA and died in Caroline County, VA in 1777. I don't know why Henry went to Caroline County. In the colonial period, Virginia was the biggest colony in America and Caroline County was the third most populous and affluent county in VA at the time of the American Revolution.

Henry married Judith (Clark) Trigg on August 13, 1719 in Middlesex Co., VA. Henry must have been quite resourceful. He married Judith, who was a 31 year old widow, when he was 21 years old. As a result, he came into 150 acres of Trigg land. He went on to expand his holdings and became a successful farmer and businessman. According to the Burk book mentioned above, ""Henry owned an ordinary (tavern), he served on the jury several times [at least 9 times], supervised road building [including the extension of the most important road in the county which led from the courthouse in Bowling Green to Burk's Ferry over the Mattapony River to Needwood Forest], won the right to build a mill dam and he had a grist mill on Jackpond Creek, farmed, and set out a peach orchard [peaches were rare at the time and were used as the basis for brandy]. The ordinary was operated from 1734 onward and was on one of the oldest roads from Annapolis to Williamsburg, about a mile below Burk's Ferry- later Burk's Bridge [now Burke's Bridge] - over the Mattaponi River in the lower center of the county."
Taverns were an important part of the social life at the time of Henry Burk's tavern. From the book "Caroline County" by T. E. Campbell, "Here planters, traders, professional men, and artisans met to discuss business and politics. Here cheats and speculators plied their crafts and wastrel hung out so long as they had, or were able to borrow, the means foe dissipation. Here traveling troupes gave shows and games of chance flourished. Cards and dice were the favorite devices for gambling on the inside of the building, while on the outside bets were placed on wrestling matches, cock-fights, gander head-pulling contests and horse-races."

Henry and Judith had seven children. One child was our ancestor John Burke (his parents added the "e" to Burk). He was born on Feb. 27, 1720 in Middlesex County, VA and died ca. 1789 in Caroline Co., VA I don't know who his wife was, but their third child was Thomas "Tommy" Burke, born ca. 1763, and died on Jan. 24, 1807. His obituary was in the Feb. 6, 1807 issue of "The Richmond Enquirer". Tommy was a Representative in the House of Delegates 1791-1792, and 1802-1804. His obituary described him as "a respectable citizen of Caroline County." He was buried in the Burke family cemetery located approximately 200 yards from Burke' Bridge Road on the site of the Burke Tavern. There are more than 40 graves there. The markers were removed by later owners of the property, but were later replaced by a single large stone in the center of the cemetery. On one side of the stone is "Burke/50 Feet To The Right of This/ Stone Stood/ Burke's Tavern/ Operated 1750-1781", and on the stone are the names of people known to have been buried there:

Tommy married three times. His first wife was Anna Aphia Gray (1771-1792). They had three children, one was your ancestor, Thomas Henry Burke, who I will discuss later, and their first child was our ancestor, John Muse Burke, born in Caroline Co., VA on Oct. 19, 1793, and died on May 31, 1835. He married on May 21, 1817 in Caroline Co., VA Sophia Frances Woolfolk, born on Jan. 12, 1799 and died at their home "Ivy Mount" on Sept. 28, 1846 at 11pm. John's home was situated on 691 acres of land along the Mattaponi River, 11 miles south of the Caroline County courthouse.

John Muse Burke and Sophia Woolfolk had nine children. My line is from their youngest child Jourdan Muse Burke.

Jourdan Muse Burke was the child of John Muse Burke and Sophia Frances Woolfolk. He was born, according to the Burk book, on January 5, 1834, but the Burke family bible says January 5, 1831. Jourdan was a clerk in a lottery house prior to the Civil War. Jourdan enlisted in the 17th Virginia Infantry "A" Company "Alexander Riflemen" CSA on April 17, 1861. He was detached in June 1862 to the newly formed (May 29, 1862) Signal Corps in the Army of the Potomac. He served under Capt. J. H. Manning, Chief Signal Officer to General Longstreet, in Wilcox's Division. Jourdan was appointed Signal Sargent (roughly equivalent of a Warrant Officer) on Feb. 15, 1864. He was in charge of class instruction in Richmond in March, 1864. He was present as Signal Sgt. with Wilcox at Appomattox.

Jourdan Burke married Teresa Anna Rogers Tatum. I was told that by my grandmother, and I have a piece of silverware with her name on it. Other than that, I don't have another thing on her. I have been searching for sixteen years. Jourdan and Teresa had two children. The first was Allen Tatum Burke, and I have nothing on him. The second was my grandfather John Woolfolk Burke, born 1867. Jourdan died on April 8, 1872, when John Woolfolk Burke was only five years old. As a result, John was raised by his aunt, Mary Ellen Burke Powell and her husband Edward Turner Powell.

John Woolfolk Burke was a commodes broker in Norfolk, Virginia. He married on April 16, 1900, Laura Wade Gray, born on Nov. 14, 1879, daughter of William Allen Gray (1851-1889) and Sarah "Sallie" Eliza Wade, daughter of Ann Cary Curtis Wade (a line to Captain Thomas Cary, a soldier in the Rev. War).John Woolfolk Burke died in Feb. 1914 and Laura died on Sept. 14, 1959.

John W. Burke and Laura Gray Burke had three sons. Allen Gray Burke, John Woolfolk Burke, and my father, Jourdan Muse Burke, born on July 10, 1911, and died in VA on Oct. 17, 1969. He was in the Army during WW II, but because of a hearing problem, he served in the U.S. where he wrote speeches for some Generals. After the war, he became a Civil Servant for the U.S. Government (a statistician). He married twice. His first wife was Harriett Will Willis who he married on Aug. 31, 1940 in Front Royal, VA. They divorced on Aug. 27, 1951. I was their only child.
