Carter, Alexander James (Alex) (1920\endash 2011)
Alexander (Alex) James Weatherly Carter passed away peacefully in Stawell, aged 91 years, on 20 December 2011, the oldest descendent of the first European family to settle the Wimmera. Alex was born on March 10, 1920, at Glendale station, via Dooen, to William Charles Carter (1867 \endash 1941) and Marjorie Weatherly (1884 \endash 1968).
Alex parents moved to Wallaloo Park soon after his birth. He was educated at Brighton Grammar School, and Longerenong Agricultural College. After his father's death in 1941, he managed Wallaloo Park through depression, drought, floods, and fires. He worked the land until retiring at 86 to Stawell. Polite and kind by nature, Alex was loved and respected by all who knew him. Wallaloo Park is now one of the top Merino studs in Australia.
Alex is survived by his wife, Mrs Shirley Carter, nee Saunders, a former medical nurse from Wellington, New Zealand. They married on October 22, 1949, and had three daughters and one son. Mrs Jenny Carter Willis, Mr John Weatherly Carter, Mrs Jane Carter McMaster and Mrs Susan Carter Fisken. Alex's late brother, Mr James Samuel Carter (1922 \endash 2000), engineer and academic, lived in Adelaide.
Alexander married Shirley Margaret Saunders, daughter of Lt-Col. D.S.O. John Llewellyn Saunders and Gwendolen Beath Beaven. (Shirley Margaret Saunders was born in Oct 1922 in Wellington, New Zealand.)
