  General Notes:

Rosemary Beattie notes:
I can confirm that Margaret Beattie (nee Long) wife of David Beattie died 5th July 1876 at the Lunatic Receiving House in Darlinghurst. She was admitted 1st July 1876 with monomania (religious). Her son James was admitted the same day 1st July 1876 but he recovered and went back to marry and have a large family at Singleton.

I had the 1876 death certificate of Margaret Beattie for several years but it had very little information and not enough to connect her to David. When I saw a report in Trove newspapers about James being taken by his friends to the Singleton Police about a week before this Margaret died, as he was supposedly of unsound mind and then being transferred to Darlinghurst I wondered if there was a connection.

Julie, another Beattie descendant followed up by visiting the archives and confirmed that it was James and Margaret and sent me the records. I'm assuming it was James, Margaret's son as the newspaper report mentioned Boggy Flat which is where my Beatties were from (near Singleton). There were no other James Beatties that I could find there though the admission records state he was married which he wasn't at the time. It's all very strange. Whether James feigned the illness to be with his mother or whether they were vicitims of some accidental poisoning or maybe an illness is anyone's guess but at least we now know Margaret died in 1876.
