On February 5, 1859 Thomas married again, this time to Sarah Roper, nee Bowditch, who already had a son, Walter John Bowditch. Sarah had been born in 1817 at Broadwey, Dorset. A Hounsell family story tells of Mary Ann and her elder brother George leaving home and travelling to London in conjunction with Mary Ann's husband-to-be, Robert Morris. They seemingly could not get on with their step-mother so they packed up and left home.

Sarah married Thomas Hounsell on 5 Feb 1859. (Thomas Hounsell was born in 1819 ¹⁰³⁶.)

Sarah next married Bowditch before 1859. (Bowditch was born circa 1820.)
