Doris Alma S Bartlett was born at Balmain North in 1900 and died at Marrickville in 1959. In 1924 she married Eric Arthur Storey, son of John Storey, MLA, of 5 Macquarie Terrace, Balmain, at Waverley. Aged 18 years and one month, when he had been working as an apprentice at Morts Dock Engineering Company for two years, he enlisted without the consent of either parent in the Army under the alias of Eric Arthur Turnbull (his mother's maiden name) on 14 April 1916. He had already served 4 years in the Balmain Militia as the company's bugler. Being only 5´0¾½ tall and of medium complexion, with brown eyes and dark brown hair, he was accepted as a bugler with B Coy 4^th Regiment, AIF, and embarked on HMAT A40 Ceramic for the war zone. He left the ship at Suez and went via Alexandria, where he transferred to the 56^th Battalion, to join the British Expeditionary Force in France. After serving one year in the trenches, Australia's Agent General in London was contacted by Eric Turnbull's mother asking him to be removed from the firing line on account of his youth until he became of age (he had been born on 6 January 1900). At Wimbreuse, France, he made a Statutory Declaration of his real name. He was appointed to the 2^nd Australian General Hospital there as a fitter and turner and escaped the war being neither gassed nor wounded. He was stricken with a bout of influenza in 1918. At the end of the conflict he was repatriated to Britain and returned to his homeland on HMAS Berrima to be discharged on 1 April 1916. He died at Randwick in 1933 aged about 33 years. Their son,
Eric Arthur Storey, died in 1976. He married Sybil Norma Roper in 1948.
