Mother was wealthy and left all her jewels to Harold, her only child. Harold sold them to survive the 1930s depression. Harold disliked his father who held him down for a tonsillectomy without anaesthesia. Harold met Ida when he was jackaroo and she was governess on a property near NSW/Qld border.

Alfred married Ida Elder Pymble Lister, daughter of Thomas Sydney Lister and Emily Australia Tom, in 1920 in Marrickville, Sydney, NSW Australia. (Ida Elder Pymble Lister was born on 16 Aug 1881 in Orange, NSW Australia, christened on 18 Dec 1881 in Wesleyan, Byng, NSW Australia, died on 9 Aug 1955 and was buried in Woronora Cemetery, near Sutherland, Sydney, NSW Australia.)
