Thomas after being found guilty of burglary and stealing in 1843 at Surry, arrived on the 'Emerald Isle' at Hobart, Tasmania on the 12th of October 1843. After receiving his Conditional Pardon on 31 March 1852 he came across to Victoria. It was here where he was suppose to have married a Jane Badden at Hamilton according to information on his death certificate would have been 1879 but no marriage located. Thomas had married Harriett Delasalle on the 23rd of August 1864 at Sale, Gippsland, Victoria. and had a family, one son and three daughters by 1876. From the time his fourth child was born in 1876, the bailiff was pursuing Thomas for the rent which had not been paid. Thomas left Harriet and the children and disappeared never to be seen by the family again. When Thomas married Rosetta in 1892, he stated he was a widower.

Thomas next married Rosetta Felstead, daughter of Benjamin Felstead and Lydia Hutchin, in 1892. (Rosetta Felstead was born on 25 Oct 1850 in Furneux Pelham, Hertfordshire England, died on 9 Jan 1941 in Point Rd, Gladesville, Sydney, NSW Australia and was buried on 10 Jan 1941 in Field of Mars Cemetery, Ryde, Sydney, NSW Australia C of E section ¹¹.)
