Jason Crosskey passed on a website by Tim Hill which notes:
At 19 years of age Henry travelled around the country as a shearer. His travels took him west as far as Hillston. He also worked in a store at Euablong in New South Wales. In the winter of 1870 he took up droving and travelled from the Lachlan to Bendigo and Melbourne. Later than year he was back in Forbes working as a blacksmith for Charles Ray where he met and married Mary Nicholson.

After his marriage he bought a blacksmith's shop from Mr. Sutherland and he made sulkies, carts, wheels and drays in Parkes. He later moved his business to Dalton Street. For 9 years he also acted as a contractor for the Bogan Gate Mail.
Later Henry sold his blacksmith business to his son William and his brother Arthur. the partnership was not a favourable one so William sold his share to his Uncle Arthur and started his own blacksmith business in Trundle.


Henry married Mary Jane Nicholson, daughter of Donald Nicholson and Margaret Francis (Fanny) Brown, on 8 Sep 1872 in Bushmans Lead, NSW Australia. (Mary Jane Nicholson was born on 23 Jul 1852 in Yass, NSW Australia, christened on 10 Oct 1852 in Yass, NSW Australia, died on 2 Oct 1934 in 14 Victoria St, Parkes, NSW Australia and was buried in Parkes C of E, NSW Australia 1049.)
