Charles Joseph was the youngest of Thomas and Catherine's children. He enlisted at Fitzroy, Victoria, on 21/1/1918 at age 24 years and 10 months. No 73595 was originally attached to the 10th Reinforcements. He was 5' 8", sallow complexion, grey eyes, brown hair and a tattoo of a ballet girl on his right arm.
His career was short, he being subject of three arrest warrants for AWOL from Broadmeadows Camp between12 February and 6 September at which point a court martial was convened and Private Stores, M Company, No.1 Depot Battalion, having been absent continuously for the preceding month, was struck off as a deserter. The Police Gazette published a notice of his arrest warrant, but there is no record (yet) of his arrest. At that stage of the war, it appears that no great effort was applied to seeking long-term absentees/deserters. Technically it became a police problem until the AIF was formally disbanded in March 1921 and all warrants for arrest were torn up.
In December 1920 the Police Gazette published a warrant for Charles' arrest for larceny (a white blanket, a white shirt, a singlet, a comb to the value of 30 shillings, the property of Fred Castings, a contractor of 34 Raglan St, Port Melbourne). He was arrested at North Fitzroy with a portion of the goods and given 14 days' jail. In June the next year there was an outstanding warrant for Charles over trespass at Collingwood, and on 8/9/21 he was arrested for breaking and entering the dwelling of James Todgell of East Brunswick.
