Noted events in his life were:
• note. 692 Ross Miller notes: Mervyn James was born in Tumbarumba in 1885 to Thomas and Catherine. He was a labourer when he enlisted in the AIF at Cootamundra on 24/7/1915. He was 29 years and four months old, 5' 6" tall, 125 lbs, with a dark complexion, blue eyes and dark brown hair. Designated a sapper (No. 3528), he was put into the Miners Corp - 12th Tunneling Company and his service record notes he was not likely to become an efficient soldier. He was transferred to 3rd Battalion on 1 October, 1915.
Mervyn was fined 10 shillings for breaking camp and insolence on 1 October 1915. He was charged with being AWOL and remanded from Darlinghurst goal on 20/3/16 to the C.O. of 46 Battalion to be dealt with. He said he had simply overstayed his leave and when arrested did not have his uniform hat - docked four days' pay. On 25/2/16 he was transferred to the Engineers. Mervyn might have had a drinking problem as he was again AWOL on 18 April and found asleep in the officer's quarters (and using an officer's bed), and had used the officer's lavatory. He was also found to be drunk on duty. That is as far as National Archives takes his military career
Mervyn married Dorothy Morris in 1934 in Petersham, Sydney, NSW Australia.692 (Dorothy Morris was born circa 1900.)
