  General Notes:

source:Keith Shrimpton where it is noted:
Mary Martin arrived on the Second Fleet Hell ship the Neptune; one hundred and fifty eight of her fellow prisoners had died during the passage to Sydney Cove. She had been convicted at the Old Bailey on 9th September 1789, of shoplifting some shawls and was sentenced to seven years
transportation. She stated in her defence that, They took me up instead of one of them. I am 17 on the 10th next June.
My friends are in the country.

On the 4th March 1792 at St. Johns Parramatta she married Thomas Smith.

Which Thomas Smith she married will probably never be known, there were a number of men of that name in the colony at that time. They had a daughter Catherine who was born on 17th June 1793. She was later to be known as Catherine Wilbow and married Matthew Andrew Elkin in 1818. Another child James was born to Mary about 1798. No record of baptism has been found, so the identity of his father is uncertain and although it could well be Thomas Smith, it was certainly not James Wilbow. He was subsequently known as James Wilbow junior, married Elizabeth Mitchell in 1822 and drowned at Pitt Town in 1839.

In the 1800-02 Muster, a James Wilbow had a farm of twenty-five acres at the Hawkesbury and had a woman and two children living with him. It is likely that the woman was Mary Martin, as she was definitely living with him in 1806 and married him in 1807. The entry appears in the St.Philips Sydney Register.

Mary married Thomas Smith on 4 Mar 1792 in St Johns, Parramatta, Sydney, NSW Australia. (Thomas Smith was born circa 1770.)
