For about the last thirty years of her life Ann Budd was the housekeeper for Henry Relf and it is believed that her last two children, Elizabeth and John were actually fathered by Henry. There is a record of an Annie Budd marrying a Henry Relf in Lewes on January 17 1817 and most family researchers feel that this couple are our Ann budd and Henry Relf. We believe that Ann and Henry thought Thomas Budd her husband was dead so they married in 1817 only to find that he was still alive somewhere so they just lived together. On her death certificate Ann is referred to as being the wife of Thomas Budd Deceased. Nobody as yet knows what became of Thomas Budd as there is no Death record as yet found. He seems to have vanished before 1816.
After the death of Ann Budd the family continued their association with Henry Relf and appear to have looked after him till his death which I think took place about 1854.
Elizabeth Budd was Baptised under the name Budd and her father was named as being Thomas Budd but she herself believed her Father was Henry Relf. We think she was baptised under the surname Budd so that she would be seen as being legitimate. John Budd born 1822 used both surnames at times but eventually settled on the name Budd rather than that of Relf. I personally have little doubt that those of us descended from Elizabeth or John Budd are descendants of Henry Relf rather than Thomas Budd.
My Grandfather George Ralph Budd aka Rogers always said that "Budd" was not the original name but as he ran away from home while in his teens he had little information about his family in England before they came to NZ. He carried the clue in his middle name but we never clicked because the spelling was different.
Ann married Thomas Budd on 15 Feb 1801 in Burwash, East Sussex England. (Thomas Budd was born on 10 Nov 1778 in Burwash, East Sussex England and died in 1854 in Burwash, East Sussex England.)
Ann next married Henry Relf. (Henry Relf was born circa 1790.)
