The Ware family arrived in Sydney from Kent, England in the 'Warwick' in 1884. A married son James Jr arrived shortly afterwards in the 'Abergeldie'.
James and his family first settled at Camp Hill near the Peat's Ferry Road. At that time the journey to Sydney involved walking along a bush track to Turramurra to connect with the horse-drawn bus which ran to Milsons Point. Thence passengers went by punt across the harbour to Circular Quay. Several members of the family worked on the railway line to the River.

James married Eliza Mary Ann Martin, daughter of Robert Martin and Mary Sommers, on 12 Oct 1856 in Frant, East Sussex England. (Eliza Mary Ann Martin was born on 2 Aug 1835 in Pembury, Kent England, died on 19 Oct 1900 in Royal North Shore Hospital, St Leonards, Sydney, NSW Australia and was buried in C of E Carlingford, Sydney, NSW Australia.)
