  Research Notes:

Michelle Monk notes:
In 1818 Mary Callagher/Kelleher was paid One pound five shillings, sevence & one half penny after successfully, with a group of female prisoners, petitioning the Govenor for payment of a quantity of beef owed to them.
Money rather than beef was paid to the women as it was found to be too difficult to disperse the beef to them.

On 26th October 1820, Mary married Samuel Higgins at St Johns Parramatta. However this marriage was bigamous as both had spouses still living and were not divorced. Mary's husband, William Callaghan/Kelleher
was sent to Port Macquarie in 1821 as a prisoner. According to the 1822 general muster Mary is listed as "Kellegar Mary wife of John Higgins".

On 25th September 1822, Samuel Higgins was charged with receiving stolen goods and after receiving 200 lashes was sent to Port Macquarie for 3 years. On 17th February 1823,
Mary, after applying to join her husband (a prisoner) at Port Macquarie, was dispatched on the Mermaid. This arrangement must not have worked because on 10th July 1824 in Parramatta Court,
Mary Higgins and Mary Hanagan were freed on a charge of suspicion of stealing pork from Andrew Nash. They were admonished and discharged, due to lack of evidence.

On 5th January 1825, John Higgins (later aka Shean) son of Mary and Samuel Higgins was christened by Father Therry. On 26th December 1826 Mary's daughter Catherine (aged 8 years)
was admitted to the Female Orphan's Institution, Parramatta. (Convict children had to be christened CofE, and a lot of the Irish girls like Mary and Bridget MacDonald had their
children taken off them and placed into institutions to become good little Protestant Colonists.) Samuel Higgins (aka Fame) is listed in the 1828 Census as being incarcerated in the Hyde Park Barracks in Sydney.

Mary married Vardy Shane in 1826 under common law. Vardy and Mary had two children, Thomas (b.1826) and Bridget (b.1828)
