The Blackman family emigrated on the ship 'Canada' in 1801. They were sponsored and highly recommended by the Colonial Office.
James' 100 acre Richmond grant adjoined fellow immigrants Dight and William Bowman. He was appointed a Richmond constable in 1806. He was awarded a liquor licence in 1809. In July 1812 he made a donation to the Richmond school building fund, but he was already in financial difficulties. He was forced to in 1813 solicit Cox for appointment as overseer of government stock, a job at which he also failed and had to resign. There was a spell in a debtor's prison. Part of the farm had been sold and was now 60 acres. In 1868 he opened a Richmond store, but was finally reduced to accepting Cox's proffered job as sexton, gravedigger and musterer of prisoners on Sundays at the church.
More land was sold, Cox incorporating it into his own family holdings. He at last found his niche as chief constable at Bathurst, where his sons James and John had been granted land.
He and his wife Elizabeth lived out his retirement with his son William at Mudgee.
