He arrived as a free settler (missionary) aboard the ship 'Experiment' on 24 Jun 1804.
After his second marriage in 1816, William went alone to join Samuel Marsden's settlement at the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, returning late in the same year with a drawing of the mission. His name appears as teacher on the first New Zealand School Register, Oct 1816.
Returning to New Zealand with his wife and child in 1817, he spent three difficult years teaching, coming back to Sydney late in 1819. His return to the Mission in 1822 seems to have been cut short.
Listed as a painter in the 1828 census, his later years, separated from his wife Elizabeth, were spent at Rylstone as a tutor to the children on 'Carwell', the family property of his friend James Vincent.
