• source. Colleen Phillips who notes: As a young man in 1872 William had travelled with his older brother, Patrick from NSW to Qld. They worked at Charters Towers and when the discovery of gold at Palmers River was announced they went further north and used their horses to form a pack team. When the port of Cooktown was established their teams worked between the Palmer and the coast. Many tales were told by Bill of the happenings in the "Early Days". After Patrick left for Rockhampton Bill continued with the teams and when the new road w as opened he used drays to transport goods. He was known as "King of the Road". After his marriage he and his bride lived at Normandy River, west of Cooktown, then in Cooktown itself. In 1902, they moved to Ebagoola Gold Field in the centre of Cape York Peninsula where Bill had the General Store. He died in Cairns on 29 Nov 1919 and his wife Sarah died there in November 1935 and both were buried at Cooktown.

William married Sarah Ann Savage, daughter of John Savage and Sarah Ann Dunn, on 26 Jan 1881 in St Marys, Cooktown, Queensland Australia. (Sarah Ann Savage was born in 1864 and died on 1 Nov 1935 in Cooktown, Queensland Australia.)
