William Toft Pullen (1834-1917)

William was born in 1834 at Spring Hill Farm Narellan, his father Henly Pullen worked as a carpenter for William Mannix at Narellan. William spent his childhood around the Narellan area near Campbelltown in Sydney. He was employed as a call-boy at the old Victoria Theatre, where his father worked in the forties. Later he served an apprenticeship as a carpenter with his father, then later with John Hill, a cabinetmaker and undertaker in King St. In 1851, at age 17, he left his apprenticeship and went prospecting for gold over the Blue Mountains near Bathurst. After making his fortune, he returned to Sydney and married Charlotte Hoy in 1855.

He was a butcher at Hargraves in 1865, a publican at Louisa Creek in 1867, and an inn-keeper at Hargraves in 1869. In 1870 he took a battery by dray to Hill End. It was the first battery made in Sydney. In partnership with Robert Rawsthorne, he owned the 15-head quartz crushing Pullen Battery situated in Clarke St, Hill End, near the Post Office. It was this battery that extracted the gold from the famous Holtermann nugget in Nov 1872; the largest piece of gold and stone taken from the ground in recorded history, weighing 630 lbs. He also had other business interests in Hill End, where he was an alderman 3 times. He had a share in a mine, and a share in one of the town's prosperous stores. William was the first treasurer of the Masonic Lodge in Hill End, and had much to do with the Church of England. In 1876 he erected a 10 stamper battery on the Macquarie River.

In 1877, William bought George Wade's general store at Cowper on the Clarence River, and moved his family there. He also started trading stores at Brushgrove and Lawrence, building wharves at Cowper and Lawrence, and a slip at Cowper. He purchased the Ethel from the Clarence and Richmond River Steamship Navigation Co. and obtained his Harbour and River Masters certificate. The Ethel was used to carry goods, parcels and produce from the stores to their customers along the river, and to collect produce from the farms, each farm having their own jetty. Maize and other produce was taken to public wharves where they were shipped by ocean steamers to other ports in Australia.

In 1883, William bought land at Woolgoolga, and trained his son Charles to take over his riverboat business on the Clarence. Charles established a fleet of riverboats over the years, 5 of which were built at his Cowper slipway. As well as carrying produce, the riverboats were used for pleasure cruises and deep-sea fishing. The only survivor of the Pullen fleet is the Mulgi, which was built at Berry's Bay in Sydney, in 1926. She was sold in 1941, to be used as a ferry on Sydney harbour. During the war she was used as a harbour personnel carrier. Her current owner conducts pleasure cruises on Sydney Harbour. In 2005 I organized a Pullen family reunion cruise on the Mulgi on Sydney Harbour.

At Woolgoolga, William built a sugar mill, a sawmill and a jetty. On 7 Jan 1888, he was mentioned in the Clarence & Richmond Examiner newspaper, having accidentally crushed his hand and damaged some of his fingers while working at his sawmill. He was a JP, took part in public affairs, and quickly became Woolgoolga's leading citizen. They named a street after him. In 1888 he built the town's first hotel, the 'Sea View,' in River St adjacent to his house, which was on the corner of River St and Clarence St. The first publican was Mr Hearne. In 1890 he built a large general store with residential accommodation. This was managed by his son Edwin.

In January 1895 he had gold lease 410 at Nana Creek by Dec 1895 he held lot 394 and in February1897 lease 487 in the Woolgoolga field his son Ernest is also named as a co-owner of these leases

When William and Charlotte celebrated their Golden Wedding in 1905, about 70 of their descendants gathered at Woolgoolga. A group photograph was taken, which was the first local news photograph to be printed in the Clarence and Richmond Examiner newspaper. In 1915, William and Charlotte retired to Coffs Harbour. He died at his son Edwin's place in Avenue St, Coffs Harbour. After his death Charlotte moved to Maclean, and died at her daughter Emily's home at Maclean.
