Alfred Edwin Perry

  • Born: 1890, Worcester, Worcestershire England
  • Marriage (1): Alice Haywood on 26 Oct 1918 in St Stevens, Smethwick, near West Bromwich, Staffordshire England
  • Died: 5 Jun 1973, Keswick, Cumbria England at age 83

  General Notes:

15 March 1912 embarked "Orontese" Orient Line, London bound for Australia.

Noted events in his life were:

• source. Keith Perry who writes:
Grandad went out in 1912 with his best mate and brother in law Jim Morris.
They were set on at the rail yards/Toowoomba Foundry. Initialy they were given the shed roofs to paint ( to see if they would work).
At that time the foundry had just landed a repeat order for steam locomotives. Grandad who was an engineering fitter was set on, building engines and Jim Morris, who was a foundry man, worked in the casting department.
They lived on a near by station, in what sounds like a ranch house, from a western. - Tales of horses being rode up the steps on to the porch and into the house, on one occasion.
Toowoomba Foundry was started by the Griffiths family. Grandad's mother was also a Griffiths, but I have not found a conection yet. The firms founders were of a family from Bristol, where as my lot seem to by from Worcestershire.
Anyway about 1915, the locomotive order was virtualy complete and Jim was down in the dumps, I dare say missing Esther and home, he said to Alf, "I'm thinking about going home". And that was it, on a whim, they packed there bags and were on the next steamer home.
Grandad died in1973. He had been interested in family history and had lots of documents, but after he died and the house was"tidied up" the vast majority were binned. A great shame. How he would have loved the possabilities of this medium. Back then, I was curiouse about Australia, but non of us really knew what questions to ask, and without the right trigger, to recall the memories he didn't say that much.He would have loved being able to see all about where he used to work, like we can today.
