I found an item in an early SA newspaper for a family of "Mrs Battinson and seven children" travelling by sea from Adelaide to Melbourne in April 1861. A few weeks later daughter Sarah died and her death certificate noted she had been in Victoria about 8 weeks. This may well be Mary perhaps newly widowed? Or perhaps Henry was trying his luck in the goldfields? It seems odd to me that she would use her maiden name unless she was distressed or unless the passage was purchased for her by her nephew John Battinson who was already in Melbourne.
