Recorded among the crew of Nineveh arriving Sydney from Puget Sound on 30 Dec 1885 as 'boy' aged 16

After separating from wife Ada, lived with mother and stepfather (Katherine and John Simpson) and oldest son John in Tweed River district. Later returned to Sydney. Joined the Naval Reserve.

Shortly after his (second) marriage to Elizabeth Drury in March 1900, served as an Able Seaman in NSW Contingent to put down the Boxer Rebellion in Beijing. Embarked 8 August 1900 aboard SS Salamis. Returned to Australia 25 April 1901 on SS
Chingtu.

Listed in Sands' 1902 directory at 3 Little Stewart Street, Paddington; in 1905 directory at Alfred St, Rozelle; 1906 directory at 38 Regent Street Paddington; 1907-10 directories at Edna St, Leichhardt.

Described himself (falsely) as a 'widower' at the time of his second marriage, and appears not to have told Elizabeth about son John (or Alfred) until she discovered this from an aunt. Seeing him off to WWI apparently sparked a family row.

Arrived in US from Liverpool on SS Lake Manitoba 31 July 1909, giving occupation as 'butcher' (http://content.ancestry.com/browse/view.aspx?dbid=1075&iid=m1464_102-0158&pid=3930946&ssrc=&fn=Alfred&ln=Share&st=g).
