The Carey Family

Selina (known to everyone as Rose – she hated the name, Selina) and her son, William (b. 6-11-1910 – father unknown) lived with Ada’s family until about 1916 when she left William there and “went bush” to cook for the shearers. It was at this
time that she met Leo, the son of a grazier from Bowning, NSW. William remained with the Eslakes for the remainder of his childhood during which time he attended Leichhardt School. He didn’t live with his mother again until some time after she
was married.

Leo was my godfather and a good one at that. He would spoil me when I stayed at their place which was, as I remember, every January during my school years (We lived in Nowra, 100 miles south of Sydney).

Leigh (b. about 1924) married Gladys Bolty from Parramatta, NSW - an only child who was a niece, or so it was said, of Henry Bolty, one time premier of Victoria. I think the wedding was in 1952. They spent their honeymoon at the Marlin Hotel in
Ulladulla, NSW. After they were married they lived at Northmead, NSW.

They had two children: Gail (b. about 1953) and

Linda (b. about 1959)

The fact that William was Rose’s son was the best-kept secret of the 20th century. When he introduced her to Vera (his eventual wife) as his mother she (Vera) was immediately sworn to secrecy and kept her promise. When we, the children, worked
out that this was the case we approached our mother with the suggestion and her reply was, ” Well, I didn’t tell you.” We never approached Rose over it. She was supposed to have been William’s (our father’s) aunty.

After Rose’s funeral ceremony (1974 or 5) Vera told Leigh and Gladys that she (Rose) was William’s mother. They were both shocked. Leigh thought he was a cousin. We never saw them again.
