Left Plymouth with parents James and Louisa aboard the Tory on 20 Dec 1848, arriving Sydney 9 April 1849 aged 2
Assumed responsibility for his siblings after his father's death in 1865. Moved the family to newly opened goldfields at Araluen, and thence to Lambing Flat (now known as Young). Apprenticed there as a tailor, then began running mail coaches
between Young and Harden, Grenfell, Marsden and other points. After the introduction of rail links he established a general carrying business in the Young district.
