Assumed responsibility for his siblings after his father's death in 1865. Moved the family to newly opened goldfields at Araluen, and thence to Lambing Flat (now known as Young). Apprenticed there as a tailor, then began running mail coaches
between Young and Harden, Grenfell, Marsden and other points. After the introduction of rail links he established a general carrying business in the Young district.

James married Eliza Hancock, daughter of Daniel Hancock and Ann Henley, on 13 Jul 1870 in Young, NSW Australia. (Eliza Hancock was born on 23 May 1849 in Adelaide, South Australia and died on 14 Sep 1932 in Young, NSW Australia.)
