• note. 885 Bill Mackey notes:
My father's father was also George William Mackey (birth and death dates and places unknown) who married Emma Pizer (my grandmother) in 1898. When we first moved to Perth in 1948 (?) we lived with her at her house at 18 St Leonard's Avenue, West Leederville - a Perth suburb - until my father built the house at 38 Connolly Street, Wembley - about a mile away - in 1950/51.

His father was a Government telegraphist who ran the telegraph office at Bremer Bay (between Esperance and Albany on the WA south coast) and later (I think) at Broome (in the Kimberley region of WA). This was the service that sent telegrams by wire around Australia. After Federation (1901) it would have been part of the PMG (Post Master General's Department - the predecessor of Telstra) which handled mail, telegrams, parcel post and phones. If he worked as telegraphist (tapping out messages down the line in Morse code) before Federation, I guess he would have worked for the Government of the Colony of WA.
He was probably born in the period 1870-75 and I think it may have been in Melbourne.

George married Emma Pizer. (Emma Pizer was born circa 1875.)
