Thomas Rice

  General Notes:

Thomas RICE (brother of Sarah TOWELLS, nee RICE) born 1802 Ilminster,migrated to Sydney, New South Wales, in 1849 with wife and 6 of hischildren.

The youngest of those children, Edwin RICE, born 1846 in South Petherton,SOM, is my great grandfather.

His eldest son, Stanley Edwin RICE, born 1880 in Sydney, is mygrandfather. from Vivien Rice

He migrated with only 6. Mary was born a year after they arrived. "Only6", I say, but my mind boggles at the thought of spending 5 months,which is how long their particular voyage lasted, on a sailing ship with6 children including the youngest, my g. grandfather, at toddling stage.
Actually, Thomas RICE had 9 children in total - 2 others with his firstwife, Harriet RUTTER, who died in 1829. They were Sarah, born in 1826 inIlminster and William, who was born in April 1829 and died in March 1831in Ilminster. Sarah lived all her life in Ilminster, did not marry, anddied there in January 1875. Viv R
