Mary Anne Baker

  • Born: 1791, Newhaven, East Sussex England
  • Marriage (1): Alfred (William) Playsted on 3 Dec 1806 in Wadhurst, East Sussex England
  • Died: 1871 at age 80

  General Notes:

Divorced as a result of adultery with Gideon Wisdom the Younger, son of the servant Gideon Wisdom (who had been willed the use of a cottage by Henry Playsted). According to the record of divorce proceedings at the Arches Court in Canterbury,
Mary Ann and Gideon "had the carnal Use and Knowledge of each other's Bodies" on 6th February 1822 while Alfred was away in London on business. Mary Ann was 35 at the time, while Gideon would have been "15 years old at most".

However Mary Ann and Alfred were back living together again at the time of the 1841 Census, and subsequent censuses show them continuing to do so until Mary's death in 1871, aged 85.

Mary married Alfred (William) Playsted, son of Henry Playsted and Philadelphia Taylor, on 3 Dec 1806 in Wadhurst, East Sussex England. (Alfred (William) Playsted was born in 1783 in Wadhurst, East Sussex England, christened on 7 Feb 1783 and died on 21 Oct 1877.)

Noted events in their marriage were:

• Divorce: Divorce, 22 Jun 1822.
