James and Mary (nee Lane) New were natives of Handley, in Dorset U.K.
They were amongst the first of three shiploads of immigrants, which were chosen by Major Edward Macarthur in England, to work for his brother's James and William, of Camden.
The Macarthur's had donated land, so that a village or township might be established - this became known as Camden. It was hoped that after the contracts for these immigrants had expired - they would eventually settle in Camden and therefore help to establish it.
The Macarthur's requested that the immigrants include men with the following skills;
Agricultural labourers, farmers, shepherds, broom makers, blacksmiths etc.

James had a farm and would have to dispose of it if he was selected. He was apparently so eager to come out, that he sold half of it before he was finally given the final OK. James and Mary arrived on the Brothers (18.4.1837), with their two eldest children - Maria and Charlotte. Mary's sister Sarah and her husband Elias Thorn were also on board.
James and Mary had nine more children after their arrival - all of whom were born on the Camden Park estate and baptised at St. Johns Camden. Thomas William was their eldest son. James worked on the estate for many years and Mary, who was a very good seamstress, was employed by the Macarthur's also. During the period of just one month, Mary made 11 shirts and 18 shifts (dresses), which were all hand made.
The materials needed were supplied to her and her payment was being able to keep some of the garments - the rest were sold in the estate's store. James and Mary's children were: - Maria b 1832 - 1898 m. Thomas Dunk, Charlotte b 1835 -190? m. James Davis, Thomas William b 1838 -1899 mx1. Mary J. Dowle mx2. Margaret Boyd, James Isaac b1840 -1875 m. Mary Ann Norris, Elizabeth b1842 - (?) m. James Channell, Charles b1844 -1915 m. Sarah Loiterton, John b1846 - (?) m. Sarah Hadden, George b1849 -1864 m (?), Mary Ann b1851 - (?) m. James Hadden, Matha E. b 1855-1856, William Henry b 1857 -1939 m Sarah Lavender.

George New was killed (aged 17 years), after a fall from his horse. Charles settled at Cootamundra and Thomas William settled near Temora - the rest stayed in the Camden area.
William Henry lived on the Menangle Road section of Camden Park for many years. He was a bootmaker by trade (learnt on the estate) and was later a noted breeder of poultry at Cawdor.

James New died on 28.5.1887, aged 75 years and Mary died on 10.3.1896. aged 83 years.
They are buried together at St. John's Camden.
