In 1896, the New Chum Railway mine was the best yielding mine in Bendigo.
At the time, rich reefs had been unearthed at 3000 ft.
In 1906 a damning report was released on the adequacy of ventilation in the Bendigo mines. The New Chum Railway was one of the worst, because of the great depth of mining and inadequate ventilation. At its 4236 ft level, the temperature 95 deg. The soil was continually wet. The men sat eating their crib in a steamy fog with a temperature of over 100 deg. and humidity of 99%. The mines were 'sallow and sickly' and of two men chosen at random, 'their sputum teeming with tubercle bacilli'. However, of the evils resulting from bad that of heat and humidity was far the lesser. The killer was the silica- dust from drilling and blasting.
In 1908, Thomas was presented with a silver tea service by the employees of the mine.
