Was a bricklayer (journeyman) until called up for the 2nd world war. Was a Lance/Corporal in the Royal Engineers and then Sergeant. Saw active service in Italy and the desert with the 8th Army. Was evacuated from Dunkirk in 1940 minus
footwear.

After the war taught at a Government Training Centre (for returning servicemen) and then went to Nigeria as an Inspector of Works for the Crown Agents supervising the sinking of water wells. Retired from Nigeria when aged 55 and then got
contract work of a similar nature in Malawi (formerly Nyasaland) where he eventually died.

Incidentally, whilst serving with the 8th army during the western desert campaign, he went to Cairo on leave and found the Hills family. He also attended Dorothy's wedding which coincided with his leave, but went back to his unit and continued through the war. He had quite a hard time but was a very tough character. He went to France first of all and was evacuated from Dunkirk, The destroyer that picked him up was sunk in the channel so he had to swim around for a couple of hours before being picked up by another ship. He was only home for a short time before being sent to join the 8th army in Egypt in the beginning of 1941 and he was away then until the end of the war in 1945.


Albert married Winifred Maud Saunders (Sanders), daughter of Arthur Ernest Saunders and Blanche Margaret Reid, on 22 Jun 1935 in Fareham, Hampshire England. (Winifred Maud Saunders (Sanders) was born on 19 Aug 1910 in 6 Charles St, Gosport, Hampshire England, christened in Gosport, Hampshire England, died on 12 Nov 1996 in Gosport, Hampshire England and was buried on 19 Nov 1996 in Cremated Portchester, Hampshire England Ashes Scattered.)
