13.06.1897 Insp. Duly reports that he saw PC Stannen who was on No. 1 Beat a n d P C Marchant who was on No. 3 Beat come out of the West Street Brewery at 6. 1 5 a.m .. Both PCs left the Town Hall shortly before 6 a.m. CROSS REF TO STANNE N' S RECO RD.

19.10.1897 Insp Blackman reports that Thomas Stevens No. 16 Grant Street (18 7 F 4 )came to the Level Station at 10.15 p.m. and stated that when crossing Alb io n Hi ll (187 F3) 10 minutes before he saw PC Marchant who was in plain clothe s d run k and having an altercation with another constable in uniform and Marcha nt a ssau lted Stevens by seizing him by the throat. The Inspector and Sergt. A . Hamp ton v isited PC Marchant at his home at 10.45 p.m. and he was there drunk
27.10.1897 Taken before the Watch Committee and reduced to 3rd Class and 4 ye a r s deducted from his period of service for pension purposes
26.07.1898 PC Marchant injured whilst attempting to stop a runaway horse. (S e e N ewspaper report below.)
07.02.1900 Granted a pension of £12-10-3 per annum through being practically i n c apacitated from earning his livelihood in the execution of his duty. Marcha n t t o present himself for further examination by the Police Surgeon at the exp ir atio n of 12 months. Also granted £10-8-0 payable in weekly instalments of 4/ - o ut o f the accident and special service fund created 1.6.1881.

ACCIDENTS AT BRIGHTON
Policeman Seriously Injured
A couple of accidents - one of a somewhat serious character - occurred in Brig h t on last evening. About half-past five a horse attached to a vehicle bolted f r o m outside the Dolphin, North Road, having evidently been frightened by som e bo y s who made a noise. The animal ran through the adjacent streets into Chur ch St re et, where P.C. Marchant, in stopping the runaway, was knocked down. P.C . Terr y a nd a cabman rendered assistance to Marchant, whose bravery resulted i n his s usta ining concussion of the brain. He was removed to the Sussex Count y Hospital , whe re his detention was, of course, necessary. It was stated toda y that the i njure d man is doing fairly well................................... ...
