C1841 - Farmer's Son 24/1/1852 Sussex Ag Express "A shocking accident happened on Saturday last t o t h e eldest son of Mr Thomas Marchant, of the Bridge Farm, near St John's Com mon . M r Marchant was foddering his stock and not having quite enough hay to fi nis h wit h, sent his son, a lad about twelve years of age, to the stack for a l ittl e mor e hay which was already cut, there being two cants began. The lad, i n jump ing u p slipped and caught hold of the handle of the knife; he fell to th e groun d an d the knife inflicted a severe wound under the ear, extending alon g the jaw bon e for four or five inches. The poor youth nearly bled to death; tw o minute s mor e would have terminated his existence. Mr Byass and his son fro m Cuckfiel d wer e in attendance and also Mr Holman jun. of Hurstpierpoint, wh o deemed it n ecessa ry to send for Dr Laurence from Brighton.
