Elizabeth Powell
(Abt 1645-1683) |
Elizabeth Powell
General Notes: In the late 17th century two Acts of Parliament were passed to enforce the wrapping of bodies in wool. Failure to comply with the law, introduced to boost the flagging wool industry, incurred the payment of a £5 fine. Often, wealthier members of the community were prepared to incur the fine and bury their dead in better fabric. Laughton parish register records the following note for Elizabeth's burial: "Mem: that the forfeitur was paid for her being buried in Linnen." Elizabeth married Edward Shoosmith, son of William Shoosmith and Mary, on 7 Jun 1664 in Laughton, East Sussex England. (Edward Shoosmith was born in 1641, died in Oct 1720 and was buried on 25 Oct 1720 in Laughton, East Sussex England.) |
