General Notes:
Letter from Private G.W. Sladen 4509 AIF D Coy. France 2/3/1917. Dear Mrs. Auliff. Just a few lines to you, to express my sympathy in your husbands death. I was awfully cut up myself, as I knew him so well. I thought you would like to hear from me, as I saw him killed, and I helped to bury him. He was killed instantly with a shell, so one consolation is that he did not suffer any pain, and was buried just out side the village of Vaulx. His company were advancing at the time he fell. A little cross with his name etc is erected over his grave. He fell doing his duty for his King and Country and I think no man could meet with death in a better way. Once again I would like to take this opportunity of expressing my sympathy to you and under the circumstances I hope all are well at home. Yours sincerely Pte G.W. Sladen. He was killed on the 21st March 1917. Same battalion as Herb was in only put D Coy. A.I.F.
