• source. & http://www.easystreetretreat.com.au/australianroyalty where it is noted:
Thomas Gosper, a waterman aged 19 and two other young men were sentenced to seven years transportation at the 2 April 1787 Kingston (Surrey) assizes for cutting three pieces of rope known as 'headfasts' from a lighter (a boat or barge used for unloading ships) moored at Rotherhithe on the Thames on 23 Nov 1786 [probably with an intent to rob the lighter]. In Aug 1788 he was ordered from goal to the 'Ceres' hulk at Langstone Harbour, Portsmouth, whence he was embarked on the ship 'Surprize' on 30 Nov 1789, arriving in the colony on 26 Jun 1790.
He was indicted under the name 'Gosport' but Gosper appears to be the correct form of his name. He had been baptised as Thomas Roker Alexander Gosper son of Thomas and Jane Gosper (nee Worton) at St Marys, Rotherhithe on 28 May 1768. He had been born in this riverside parish on the south bank of the Thames on 10 May.
Thomas behaved well in the colony and, with a 30 acre grant confirmed in Nov 1794, he was among the earliest emancipist settlers on the banks of the Hawkesbury River. The site of the farm was just north of the future town of Windsor. He probably began clearing the land some months prior to the grant being registered.
By 1802 Thomas was steadily improving his position with 18 acres cultivated (13 in wheat, 5 in maize), 10 hogs and 15 bushels of maize in store. He fully supported himself, Mary, three children and a free worker. His holdings expanded with a grant of 100 acres up river at Freemans Reach in 1803. In 1806 he was recorded as holding 90 acres (12 cultivated in wheat, barley, potatoes, orchard and garden) with the remainder leased to tennant farmers. He owned 7 pigs, held 3 bushels of maize and supported Mary, 5 children and a convict worker.
The disastrous floods of 1806 may have contributed to the family's slightly reduced acreage under cultivation and stock numbers.
In 1817 Thomas leased 12 acres of his Freemans Reach farm and mortgaged the property to the newly formed Bank of New South Wales.
As his sons grew to maturity, his position improved. By 1822 he had attained a comfortable level of prosperity, holding, with 2 of his sons, 172 acres and owning between them 4 horses, 40 cattle and 80 hogs.
In 1827 he sold his original 30 acre grant for £340.
In 1828 he was recorded as holding 220 acres and was described as a resident of the Wilberforce area.
In 1829 he purchased 110 acres in the Upper Colo area, which had been opened for settlement. Two of his sons had been granted land there.
In 1833 he sold his 1803 Freemans Reach grant and became a permanent resident of the Upper Colo area.
