Sydney Lorain Bryant enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 31/7/1915. His mother Mrs Mary Ann Bryant, Hastings, Victoria was his next of kin. The Certificate of Medical Examination describes Sydney as: - Age - 26 years 6 months, height - 5 feet 3 inches, weight - 8 stone 10 pounds, chest measurement - 31 and a half/33 inches, complexion - fresh, eyes - blue, hair - dark brown and religious denomination - Roman Catholic. His distinctive marks were: - vac - 2 left arm, moles - shoulder, scars - left knee. Sydney disembarked on Themistaclos, Suez on 25/2/1916 Sydney fought in France and was admitted to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance, suffering with Herpes Zoster on 13/11/1917. Two days later he was transferred to 25th General Hospital. On 1/12/1917 he transferred to 1st Convalescent Depot, Boulogne. The next day he was discharged to duty. On the 31/12/1917 he was admitted to 5th Divisional Rest Station, suffering with sprained ankle. On 5/1/1918 he was transferred to 3rd Canadian General Hospital, Boulogne. A week later he transferred to 7th Convalescent Depot, Boulogne and on 2/2/1918 transferred to Rest Camp, Boulogne, four days later he returned to Duty. Sydney left England on 8/5/1919 for return to Australia, per Hospital Transport “Devanha” and reached Melbourne on 3/6/1919. He was discharged from the A.I.F. on 15/8/1919.
