Sydney Lorain Bryant enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 31/7/1915. His mother Mrs Mary Ann Bryant, Hastings, Victoria was his next of kin.
The Certificate of Medical Examination describes Sydney as: - Age - 26 years 6 months, height - 5 feet 3 inches, weight - 8 stone 10 pounds, chest measurement - 31 and a half/33 inches, complexion - fresh, eyes - blue, hair - dark brown and religious denomination - Roman Catholic. His distinctive marks were: - vac - 2 left arm, moles - shoulder, scars - left knee.
Sydney disembarked on Themistaclos, Suez on 25/2/1916
Sydney fought in France and was admitted to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance, suffering with Herpes Zoster on 13/11/1917. Two days later he was transferred to 25th General Hospital. On 1/12/1917 he transferred to 1st Convalescent Depot, Boulogne. The next day he was discharged to duty. On the 31/12/1917 he was admitted to 5th Divisional Rest Station, suffering with sprained ankle. On 5/1/1918 he was transferred to 3rd Canadian General Hospital, Boulogne. A week later he transferred to 7th Convalescent Depot, Boulogne and on 2/2/1918 transferred to Rest Camp, Boulogne, four days later he returned to Duty.
Sydney left England on 8/5/1919 for return to Australia, per Hospital Transport “Devanha” and reached Melbourne on 3/6/1919. He was discharged from the A.I.F. on 15/8/1919.

(Isabella Patricia (Bella) Smith was born in 1907 in Hastings, Victoria Australia, died on 21 Sep 1989 in Sunshine Private Hospital, Sunshine, Victoria Australia and was buried in Hastings, Victoria Australia.)
