  Research Notes:

Adrian Millane notes:
Thanks to John F Millane (Geelong) it has now been definitely established that Francis William Joseph Breen Hanlon, was the cousin of Peter Fintan Lalor - the hero / leader of the Eureka Stockage - but thru what relationship?
see <http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/71115257?searchTerm=lalor+hanlon&searchLimits>
My great grandfather was Francis William Joseph Breen Hanlon, sometimes referred to as Francis William Breen Hanlon (etc)
My name is Millane, descended from Ann Gertrude Hanlon, dau. of same Hanlon (who married Francis W Millane).
Gert (long ago dec.) always told her children that we were 'related' to Peter Lalor.
It is a known and definite fact that Peter Lalor was a very close friend of this Francis Hanlon - they lived within a few doors of each other at one stage,i in Elm grove, Richmond, Victoria. Hanlons within 2 or 3 doors of Lalor, BUT the relationship goes much further back as is evidenced by both my family's knowledge, and the obituary of Peter Lalor, which identifies Francis Hanlon, as Lalor's cousin.
I would add that although it was unclear HOW related, it has always been well known that (a) Francis Hanlon was closely attendant on Peter Lalor in his last hours, at his bedside - they were very close as I said and (b) also as said, the 2 were related though until I read the details in the obituary, I was unaware they were cousins.
Additionally, there was an ironic relationship in the sense that Francis Hanlon was an Inspector Of Mines, in the same era, and may /would have had dealings in an official capacity on behalf of 'her majesty' with his cousin, Peter Lalor.
LAST BUT DEFINITELY NOT LEAST my family has possession of a fragment of blue cloth which Peter Lalor allegedly gave to Francis William JB Hanlon - being a piece cut off the flag of the Eureka Stockade rebellion.
MY MAIN REASON IN WRITING is to ask - does anyone have any clues as to through what relationships was Peter Lalor a cousin of Hanlon?
Hanlon's father was William Hanlon, mother Mary Breen, with the Breen ancestry unclear (and thus seems a likely avenue for their relationship). Finally it may interest you that my family was given a very large paper roll with Lalor family tree on it - dated when I do not know but assume about 1920 (top of head). I assume this was given due to the relationship, by a descendant of Peter to a descendant of Hanlon, probably the daughter Gertrude who m. my grandfather.

Francis married.
