William George Smith enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 23/7/1915. His next of kin was his mother Sarah Ellen Smith, Wyuna Town, Victoria. The Certificate of Medical Examination describes William as: - age - 28 years and 8 months, height - 5 feet 2 inches, weight - 9 stone 7 pounds, chest measurement - 34/35 and a half inches, complexion - dark, eyes - light brown, hair - dark brown and religious denomination - Presbyterian. Distinctive marks were - Vac - 2 left arm. William was admitted to hospital with diphtheria on 25/2/1916 at Abbassia. He was then sent to fight in France and received gunshot wounds to his head on 30/7/1916. He recovered from this and was sent on furlough on 13/9/1916 in England. He rejoined his unit and returned to France. He returned to Australia per “City of Poona” and discharged in 1919. William’s address in 1940 was 20 Claremont Street, South Yarra, Victoria.
